Bagdon Environmental was retained for base-line ecological studies on a 1150± acre site proposed for a regional outdoor event center. Studies included extensive grassland bird surveys, with particular interest in the state listed (endangered) short-eared owl (Asio flameus); (threatened) upland sandpiper (Bartramia longicauda), northern harrier (Circus cyaneus), and Henslow’s Sparrow Ammodramus henslowii; and Special Concern species including Horned Lark (Eremophila alpestris), Vesper Sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus) and Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammadramus savannarum). Breeding bird surveys were conducted concurrently with grassland bird surveys to assess the potential impacts to avian fauna from the proposed project.
Phase I bog turtle (Glyptemys muhlenbergii) surveys were also performed on wetlands throughout the site. Vegetation community mapping and rare plant species surveys were conducted as part of the baseline ecological assessment.
